MESNZ has secured a position on the fledgling Occupational Safety and Health Industry Group. (OHSIG) The new group, formed under the umbrella of the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) is charged with knitting together previously fragmented health and safety groups to ensure a cohesive approach to health and safety governance. With IPENZ already occupying a position with the new group, the inclusion of MESNZ is seen as an ideal companion; where IPENZ represents engineering design, MESNZ brings to the table the interests of engineers at the coal face charged with redesigning and maintaining plant, as well as often being at risk themselves.
Through its membership MESNZ hopes to provide opportunities for engineers with a health and safety interest to participating in OHSIG activities and initiatives. The inaugural OHSIG conference to be held in September will feature a paper from MESNZ intended as a heads up on health and safety in the real world. The paper is a collaborative effort from MESNZ committee members Barry Robinson, John de Bono and Craig Carlyle.
